Determine Your Interest
Is an international assignment right for you and your family? It can be a wonderful, life-changing experience if you are selected for an assignment in another country. While assignments are intended to be temporary in nature (generally three to five years), there’s a lot to think about as you consider working outside your home country.
Career
- What advancement options are available to you? Will working overseas boost your career? Your manager can help you identify roles—at home and abroad—that match your skills, experience and long-term career goals.
Cultural Readiness
- How would you rate your cultural sensitivity, flexibility and desire to experience new things? PepsiCo provides a tool to help you and your spouse/partner assess your adaptability to new cultures and environments: The SAGE (Self-Assessment for Global Endeavors) is found on the CultureWizard website. You’ll need to register to use the site. Your responses and feedback are completely confidential and are never shared with PepsiCo.
-
Explore information about specific countries on the International SOS website. You can also find more information about SOS here.
-
Familiarize yourself with the particular aspects of other cities and countries. Read as much as you can and be sure to find out what unique safety and security challenges you may face. Read Global Security’s travel guide or visit this Global Security website for more details.
Health
- How healthy are you and your family members? Most countries require a general physical examination for individuals to obtain a visa and work permit, and may restrict people with certain medical conditions from entry.
- Is appropriate and specialized health care available in the host country to support any existing medical conditions?
- Are the medications you need readily available in the host country, or can you transport them there?
Education
- What resources will your school-age children require, such as special education, private schooling, tutoring or higher education? Our relocation partners can provide guidance and detailed information on what’s available in other countries.
Family
- Is your spouse/partner able to work in another country? Consider the potential loss of a second income.
- Do you have a same-sex domestic partner or spouse or a common law spouse? Immigration and visa guidelines vary by country and may not allow, or may require separate applications for, these individuals.
- Keep in mind that PepsiCo cannot sponsor, fund or guarantee the relocation of extended family members (parents, in-laws, grandparents, etc.). This also extends to domestic employees who live and/or work in your home.
- If you are divorced and have children, how will living overseas affect your child custody agreements? Review the implications with your legal counsel.
Pets
- Your pets are part of the family too!
- You should be aware of customs, quarantine restrictions and other requirements for taking animals into the host country. Veterinary preparation and quarantine requirements will be at your expense.
- Check the quarantine regulations with the moving coordinator. Planning ahead can provide you with alternatives to costly quarantine at the host location.
